When you think of basketball, do you think of Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal… or Dr. James Naismith?
Dr. Naismith? Who was he? What did he do for basketball?
James Naismith was born in Ontario, Canada (1), in 1861 (2). He was a good athlete and a good student. He always loved school (3).
Dr. Naismith earned four (4) degrees, including one in medicine. But his biggest contribution to the world did not come from his work as a medical doctor.
In the winter of 1891 (5), he worked as a gym instructor in Massachusetts. His students were active and hard to control (6). He wanted them to play an indoor sport because it was too cold to play outdoors (7). He invented the game of basketball. It became an instant success in the United States. Soon basketball (8) spread to other countries.
